Due to global warming, the permafrost (the soil that should always be frozen) in the Arctic does not freeze anymore during winter. Thus, it remains damp and humming. Researchers have noticed this phenomenon and they draw attention to the danger this phenomenon pose.

Permafrost stores billions of tons of carbon, which will reach the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases: methane and carbon dioxide. The release of these gases will have add an extra speed to already accelerating climate warming. Experts’ warning comes after a study made by Russian researchers. Nikita Zimov coordinated a team of scientists who dug the soil in the Cherskiy area in northern Siberia. Here is one of the coolest places on the planet. During most winters, the average temperature drops to -34 degrees Celsius.

However, in April, when the excavations took place, the soil in the area was soft and damp, not frozen, as it was expected. According to estimates made by geologists, there are now more than 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon in the Permafrost. That is more than twice as much as the quantity found in the atmosphere.

If this particular soil melts, the microbes begin to consume the organic matter from it and thus release the carbon in the atmosphere, like methane gas and carbon dioxide.

In the same area where Professor Zimov did the study, a team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany found that the level of snow dropped up to 50% in the last 5 years.

The snow isolates the soil and protects it from heating, thus preventing its melting. The tests have shown that the temperature in permafrost, at a depth of 30 cm, has increased by 6 degrees Celsius in the period of time between 2013 and 2018. That happened due to the fact that the amount of snow above it has been greatly reduced.

A team of scientists at the University of Toledo in the United States has revealed that prolonged exposure to blue light triggers the release of toxic molecules in photoreceptor cells that, in time, could lead to vision issues. In time, this can lead to macular degeneration, an ophthalmic disorder that causes destruction of central vision. In other words, the blue light, which has a shorter wavelength and emits more energy compared to other colors, can gradually damage vision.

Macular degeneration, a real problem

“We are being exposed to blue light continuously, and the eye’s cornea and lens cannot block or reflect it […] It’s no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye’s retina. Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow down the process of macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop,” said Ajith Karunarathne, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Toledo University.

Macular degeneration, which in the UK affects approximately 2.4% of the population, is a common disorder among people aged 50 or 60, resulting in significant loss of visual acuity. This condition is caused by the death of photoreceptors, light-sensitive cells present in the retina.

Senile macular degeneration is the main cause of vision loss in the United States and, although it does not cause total blindness, it has a significant impact on the day-to-day activities of people affected, such as reading or recognizing faces.

Photoreceptor cells require certain retinal molecules to sense light and trigger signal transmission to the brain thus forming the images. Scientists have found that retinal molecules introduced into other types of cells in the body, such as cancer, heart, or neurons, cause their death when exposed to blue light. They also noticed that neither this type of light nor the retinal molecules have an effect on cells if they act independently and are not associated.

“No activity is sparked with green, yellow or red light […] The retinal-generated toxicity by blue light is universal. It can kill any cell type.” said Dr. Karunarathne.

Researchers have concluded that average temperatures across the globe could be abnormally high between 2018 and 2022. The most important factor underlying this estimation is the multiplication of “extreme heat events” at the surface of the earth and water.

The study was conducted before the heat waves that led to the record temperatures that we’ve endured this year. But the unusually hot weather was correctly predicted by researchers who estimated for 2018 a high probability of heat abnormalities relative to the global warming effects. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, was received for publication in January.

The new technique used o reach these conclusions is called Procast (Probabilistic forecast). It attempts to rationalize the chaotic behavior of systems, such as the Earth’s climate. The process involves collecting information from previous changes in a particular state of the system in order to calculate the probability chances of transitions to new future states. A retrospective test of the method accurately predicted the discontinuity (hiatus) of global warming from 1998 to 2013.

Scientists led by Dr. Florian Sevellec, of the Physical and Space Oceanography Laboratory at the University of Brest, France, noted: “What we found is that for the next five years or so, there is a high likelihood of an anomalously warm climate compared to anomalously cold”

The researcher believes that this will temporarily accentuate the long-term warming trend. The next warm period is associated with a higher probability of extreme temperatures to extremes. The canonical events affecting the surface of the water can increase tropical storm activity. According to NASA, 2016 was the warmest year on record, followed by 2017, 2015 and 2014.

It could be possible for plants to create their own fertilizer

A new study led by scientists at Washington University in St. Louis Louis has shown that it is possible to modify plants in order for them to create their own fertilizer. This breakthrough could have a revolutionary effect on agriculture and could help billions of people.

The study, led by Himadri Pakrasi and Maitrayee Bhattacharyya-Pakrasi, was recently published in the mBio magazine.

The traditional method of creating fertilizer is costly and inefficient, but it is based on nitrogen, by far the most abundant element in the atmosphere.
According to Phys, researchers have modified bacteria that can use the gas found in the atmosphere. The process known as “fixing” nitrogen and it is an important step towards changing plants that can do the same.

“Cyanobacteria are the only bacteria that have a circadian rhythm,” Pakrasi said. These bacteria photosynthesize during the day, turning the sunlight into chemical energy that is used as fuel. At night, they will start the “fixing” nitrogen process after removing a large portion of oxygen created during photosynthesis.

The team of researches took some genes from Cyanothece, responsible for this day-night mechanism, and mixed them in another cyanobacteria called Synechocystis. This way, it could take the nitrogen out of the air.

The next step for the research team is to determine the details of the process and to see exactly which genes are needed to for the “fixing” nitrogen process. Then, collaboration with botanists will be critical to applying this method to plants. If they will succeed, we should expect important changes in agriculture all around the world.

A recent report created by Blancco shows how frequently mobile phones broke down in the first months of this year. According to the “State of Mobile Device Repair & Security” document, 18.9% of Android phones have failed, compared with just 15.1% iOS devices.
