CV-1: The retro-inspired electric car was presented at an exhibition near Moscow

The CV-1 electric car was inspired by a model made in the 1970s called Izh-Kombi (IZh 21252) and it was build by Kalashnikov. The company is the famous manufacturer of the feared AK-47 weapon, and it has lately tried to expand to other markets. It began to launch clothes, umbrellas, or cell phone covers and now electric cars.

CV-1: The retro-inspired electric

The maximum speed of CV-1 electric car is 80 km / h and the manufacturer hopes that it will be able to compete with Elon Musk’s Tesla. However, a company spokesman has not been able to show the potential advantages of this car over Tesla. The reasons behind the lack of arguments could be that the car is in a phase that’s far from mass production. Even so, the manufacturer does not hesitate to promote this car with the “electric supercar” slogan. It was stated that the car will “let us stand in the ranks of global electric car producers such as Tesla.”

The model has a range of 350 km per charge. So far, Kalashnikov has not announced when the electric car will be available or how much it will cost. It’s hard to believe that a car with such a retro design is able to compete with Tesla at a wold-wide level. But it may sell well in Russia, especially since Tesla has not sold many units in this country. Even so, it’s a huge step forward for a company that’s known for building weapons of destruction. It’s a great step forward for humanity!

An alarming phenomenon will occur at the North Pole!

Due to global warming, the permafrost (the soil that should always be frozen) in the Arctic does not freeze anymore during winter. Thus, it remains damp and humming. Researchers have noticed this phenomenon and they draw attention to the danger this phenomenon pose.

Permafrost stores billions of tons of carbon, which will reach the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases: methane and carbon dioxide. The release of these gases will have add an extra speed to already accelerating climate warming. Experts’ warning comes after a study made by Russian researchers. Nikita Zimov coordinated a team of scientists who dug the soil in the Cherskiy area in northern Siberia. Here is one of the coolest places on the planet. During most winters, the average temperature drops to -34 degrees Celsius.

However, in April, when the excavations took place, the soil in the area was soft and damp, not frozen, as it was expected. According to estimates made by geologists, there are now more than 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon in the Permafrost. That is more than twice as much as the quantity found in the atmosphere.

If this particular soil melts, the microbes begin to consume the organic matter from it and thus release the carbon in the atmosphere, like methane gas and carbon dioxide.

In the same area where Professor Zimov did the study, a team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany found that the level of snow dropped up to 50% in the last 5 years.

The snow isolates the soil and protects it from heating, thus preventing its melting. The tests have shown that the temperature in permafrost, at a depth of 30 cm, has increased by 6 degrees Celsius in the period of time between 2013 and 2018. That happened due to the fact that the amount of snow above it has been greatly reduced.

Blue light emitted by smartphones and tablets can lead to vision issues

A team of scientists at the University of Toledo in the United States has revealed that prolonged exposure to blue light triggers the release of toxic molecules in photoreceptor cells that, in time, could lead to vision issues. In time, this can lead to macular degeneration, an ophthalmic disorder that causes destruction of central vision. In other words, the blue light, which has a shorter wavelength and emits more energy compared to other colors, can gradually damage vision.

Macular degeneration, a real problem

“We are being exposed to blue light continuously, and the eye’s cornea and lens cannot block or reflect it […] It’s no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye’s retina. Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow down the process of macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop,” said Ajith Karunarathne, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Toledo University.

Macular degeneration, which in the UK affects approximately 2.4% of the population, is a common disorder among people aged 50 or 60, resulting in significant loss of visual acuity. This condition is caused by the death of photoreceptors, light-sensitive cells present in the retina.

Senile macular degeneration is the main cause of vision loss in the United States and, although it does not cause total blindness, it has a significant impact on the day-to-day activities of people affected, such as reading or recognizing faces.

Photoreceptor cells require certain retinal molecules to sense light and trigger signal transmission to the brain thus forming the images. Scientists have found that retinal molecules introduced into other types of cells in the body, such as cancer, heart, or neurons, cause their death when exposed to blue light. They also noticed that neither this type of light nor the retinal molecules have an effect on cells if they act independently and are not associated.

“No activity is sparked with green, yellow or red light […] The retinal-generated toxicity by blue light is universal. It can kill any cell type.” said Dr. Karunarathne.

d-Alpha-Tocopherol is a naturally-occurring form of vitamin E

Researchers have discovered that a molecule called alpha tocoferol, a natural antioxidant found in the eye and the rest of the body, stops the death of cells but does not provide any protection for the elderly whose immune system is weakened. At this point the real injuries occur. People who want to protect their eyes from these unwanted effects are advised to wear glasses with lenses provided with both a blue light filter and a UV-resistant filter and also not to use mobile phones or tablets in the dark.

The weather will change radically in the coming years. How hot it will be

Researchers have concluded that average temperatures across the globe could be abnormally high between 2018 and 2022. The most important factor underlying this estimation is the multiplication of “extreme heat events” at the surface of the earth and water.

The study was conducted before the heat waves that led to the record temperatures that we’ve endured this year. But the unusually hot weather was correctly predicted by researchers who estimated for 2018 a high probability of heat abnormalities relative to the global warming effects. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, was received for publication in January.

The new technique used o reach these conclusions is called Procast (Probabilistic forecast). It attempts to rationalize the chaotic behavior of systems, such as the Earth’s climate. The process involves collecting information from previous changes in a particular state of the system in order to calculate the probability chances of transitions to new future states. A retrospective test of the method accurately predicted the discontinuity (hiatus) of global warming from 1998 to 2013.

Scientists led by Dr. Florian Sevellec, of the Physical and Space Oceanography Laboratory at the University of Brest, France, noted: “What we found is that for the next five years or so, there is a high likelihood of an anomalously warm climate compared to anomalously cold”

The researcher believes that this will temporarily accentuate the long-term warming trend. The next warm period is associated with a higher probability of extreme temperatures to extremes. The canonical events affecting the surface of the water can increase tropical storm activity. According to NASA, 2016 was the warmest year on record, followed by 2017, 2015 and 2014.

Why are most airplanes painted white?

When it comes to airplanes, white is the primarily preferred color because it reflects the sun’s rays and radiation. Thus, since it is painted white, the airplane does not heat up inside as much. Also, this reduces the cost of cooling the cabin. White paint acts as a sort of “sunscreen lotion,” according to an aviation expert. Moreover, this color is better preserved over time.

Another reason why this color is preferred is the need to protect the composite materials used in the construction of modern airplanes. For example, the front part of the airplane is made of thin transparent plastic because it shelters the radar. The control surfaces are also made of composite materials. They are painted in white or light gray to protect them from the sun, which can affect their properties over time.

However, this does not mean that planes painted in other colors are dangerous. But they require significantly higher maintenance costs: more energy is needed to cool the cabin, and the paint degrades more quickly in direct sunlight. There have been companies like American Airlines, who have not painted their airplanes for decades. However, from time to time, the aircraft had to be polished because the aluminum tends to become matte and the cost of such a procedure is definitely not small.

Also, they are painted white for security reasons. A white airplane is easier to be spotted in the sky.

The shortest fly from London to New York will take only two hours

Although commercial planes have shorten the time it takes to go from one place to another, there are people that are still complaining about long flight hours. Boeing could have a solution to the problem. It has introduced details of a new type of Hypersonic Airplane that will be able to cross the distance between New York to London in just 2 hours. The first ultra-fast Mach 5 flight could take place in ten years from now, 2028. The Hypersonic aircraft will be three times faster than a Concorde and will fly much higher. It is estimated that it will fly at an altitude of about 95,000 ft (29 km).

“Building the future at Boeing requires looking decades ahead at what could be possible, and innovating now to make it happen,” Boeing said.

The aircraft will be a little smaller than a Boeing 737 and will carry only 34 passengers. We can expect the prices to be accordingly. For the time being, the company has shown few designs and layouts with the new model. As a design, it seems to be a truly futuristic, a combination of a Concorde and a spacecraft.

“Boeing is building upon a foundation of six decades of work designing, developing and flying experimental hypersonic vehicles, which makes us the right company to lead the effort in bringing this technology to market in the future.”

It could be possible for plants to create their own fertilizer

A new study led by scientists at Washington University in St. Louis Louis has shown that it is possible to modify plants in order for them to create their own fertilizer. This breakthrough could have a revolutionary effect on agriculture and could help billions of people.

The study, led by Himadri Pakrasi and Maitrayee Bhattacharyya-Pakrasi, was recently published in the mBio magazine.

The traditional method of creating fertilizer is costly and inefficient, but it is based on nitrogen, by far the most abundant element in the atmosphere.
According to Phys, researchers have modified bacteria that can use the gas found in the atmosphere. The process known as “fixing” nitrogen and it is an important step towards changing plants that can do the same.

“Cyanobacteria are the only bacteria that have a circadian rhythm,” Pakrasi said. These bacteria photosynthesize during the day, turning the sunlight into chemical energy that is used as fuel. At night, they will start the “fixing” nitrogen process after removing a large portion of oxygen created during photosynthesis.

The team of researches took some genes from Cyanothece, responsible for this day-night mechanism, and mixed them in another cyanobacteria called Synechocystis. This way, it could take the nitrogen out of the air.

The next step for the research team is to determine the details of the process and to see exactly which genes are needed to for the “fixing” nitrogen process. Then, collaboration with botanists will be critical to applying this method to plants. If they will succeed, we should expect important changes in agriculture all around the world.

Which smartphones have malfunctioned most often in recent months?

A recent report created by Blancco shows how frequently mobile phones broke down in the first months of this year. According to the “State of Mobile Device Repair & Security” document, 18.9% of Android phones have failed, compared with just 15.1% iOS devices.

Smartphone failure 2018 report

Of these, most problems were encountered on Samsung smartphones (27.4%), followed by the iPhone 6 (22%) and iPhone 6s (16%). The issue of the iPhone 6 and 6s has been known since 2016, when many users started reporting the touch screen spoof because of a horizontal gray line that appeared on the display.

iOS smartphones failure report

Oh, and there’s Apple’s decision to slow down the performance of older iPhone models in order to save battery power, which led to a real scandal involving the American manufacturer, many users suing the company.

Android failure rate 2018

But Samsung is not the only one, other Android phone manufacturers with high failure rate are in the list: Xiaomi (14.2%) and Motorola (9.6%).

The study included phones sent to the company for testing and resetting between January and April 2018. Of these, over 74% of iOS phones were running iOS 11, and 52% of Android models running Android Nook.

In the iOS phones included in the report, most problems have been encountered with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. On Android models, the reported issues were on the phone’s performance, followed by problems related to the camera, microphone, and battery charging. This year, 34% of Android phones had performance issues in the first months of the year, compared with only 10% in the same period last year.

Smartphone planned obsolence

In an article from 2014, it was stated that most smartphone manufactures have used a “built-in obsolescence” strategy for most of their products.

In other words, they were not meant to last, especially when a new product will be released the following year. The user needs enough reasons for the upgrade, right? The European Parliament had a long conversation on this topic last year, arguing that we need products that will have a longer lifespan. Also, they feel that these products should be easier to repair, especially since they are so costly. A study from the same year states that, if a choice is available, the consumer would love to repair their devices rather than buy new ones.

“We must reinstate the reparability of all products put on the market. We have to make sure that batteries are no longer glued into a product, but are screwed in so that we do not have to throw away a phone when the battery breaks down. We need to make sure that consumers are aware of how long the products last and how they can be repaired”, said Pascal Durand (Greens/EFA, FR), rapporteur.

Which smartphone has malfunctioned most often in recent months?

It is hard to pinpoint exactly which smartphone has been malfunctioning the most recently, mostly because the study mentions Samsung without naming a particular device. But, undoubtedly, Samsung devices have malfunctioned most often in recent month, with a 27.4 malfunctioning percent rate.

In the other camp, iPhone 6 seems to be at the top of the charts when it comes to Apple malfunctions. Users reported various problems with iPhone 6, including Touch ID malfunctions, battery problems, Bluetooth not working, unresponsive touchscreen, camera not working…

How Novichok nerve agents work

Novichok, the nerve agent that was used on the former former agent Serghei Skripal and his daughter, Julia, is a much stronger chemical weapon than VX, the substance used in the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the North Korean dictator’s step-brother.

Unlike other known neurotoxins which are used in the form of vapor or liquid, Novichok is mostly used as an ultra-fine powder.

How does this chemical weapon work?

Novichok is made up of two components that become toxic when they get mixed. In their pure form, neurotoxic agents like Novichok have no color or odor, making it extremely difficult to detect. Any person who comes in contact with this toxic substance through the skin, breathes or ingests particles will become ill immediately.

Some types of Novichok agents are prepared in powder form, others can be obtained locally by mixing two other less toxic compounds that can be introduced more easily across the border.

That’s why Novichok is more difficult to identify than Sarin gas or VX, but it is more sophisticated and more dangerous, explains Gary Stephens of the University of Reading.

After entering the body, the agent disturbs chemical “signals” that exist between tissues and organs, causing an overload of this process, which leads to loss of control of the muscles and gradually to all bodily functions.

Novichok nerve agents have the following side effects: difficulty in breathing, increased salivation, seizures, paralysis and, in some cases, death.

Earlier this year, two British citizens were exposed to this poison. British Prime Minister Theresa May said in the London Parliament that “…the Russian state was culpable for the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter – and for threatening the lives of other British citizens.”

Furthermore, Theresa May gave Moscow a deadline to provide explanations to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OIAC).
