I really loved the gadgets that surfaced lately, especially in terms of smartwatches. Moto 360, LG Watch Urbane, Huawei Watch W1, Samsung Gear S2, Apple Watch. All these small devices are great and they bring an addition to a busy life, but they all suffer from the same problem: you need to charge them every night in order to use them day by day. That’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but once you forget to charge your smartwatch once, you will understand the frustration of having a dead watch on your wrist.
Thermoelectric generator technology
A company called Matrix Industries promises a fancy smartwatch called PowerWatch that doesn’t need charging. According to the manufacturer, the watch uses thermoelectric generator technology. We have seen this before in other gadgets, but seeing it implemented in a smartwatch brings me much joy. The concept is simple: with this technology inside, the watch converts heat directly into electrical energy through a phenomenon called the Seebeck effect (Wikipedia). In theory, it should work forever as long as there is a difference of temperature between the two sides of the watch. When the watch is not being used or it can’t generate enough energy, it goes into a self-preserving power mode, keeping the correct time until you will charge it again.
PowerWatch features
This smartwatch doesn’t pack too many features, since it’s so power efficient. You will be able to sync it with your smartphone in order to get the correct hour from the Internet, but that’s about all there is. No calls or message notification available. Instead, it packs important features for fitness tracking. It has a higher accuracy in calculating the number of calories burned during a workout thanks to the unique thermoelectric technology.
