This year, the movie Gravity just won 7 awards during the Oscar ceremony – The 86th Annual Academy Awards. With this special occasion, NASA decided to share with us a collection of real images that depict the life of astronauts in space, how they work and how they live.
Indeed, the U.S. agency has shared 31 stunning photos featuring real astronauts working in the vacuum and solitude of space, just like the characters from the movie. As a bonus, we can enjoy some of the nicest scenery of our good old Earth from far away.
Gravity earned over $700 million at the Box Office and it’s probably the best science fiction movie of the year. It presents the excruciating and heartbreaking journey of a female astronaut in her attempt to return to Eart after an unexpected and destructive mid-orbit event.
The movie captured the solitude and greatness of space perfectly, and after 20 minutes of watching it I was magnetized by the story and until the end of it I forgot I was watching a movie and I was living the events along with the protagonist. It’s that good!
Dr. Cady Coleman, a NASA astronaut that acted as a science consultant for it, said that the risk presented in this Hollywood story is real and astronauts in space face death every single day they are away from home.
Dr. Coleman also added that life in space is surrounded by feelings related to claustrophobia and out-of-control, like something larger then life is in control of the astronauts.
